Katie Brown is passionate about all things domestic: A beautifully set table. The perfect homemade gift. Paint that puts a room in just the right light.

But she understands that some of us who yearn for the stylish life grow faint at the thought of making our own phyllo dough. Katie is the lifestyle maven for those who want fast, easy projects and recipes that yield sensational results without breaking the bank. (And she can really demystify a hot glue gun.)

On her A&E series “All Year Round With Katie Brown,” Katie brings fresh, whimsical and inventive ideas to the art of living, whether she’s organizing a dinner party, renovating a room or simplifying a household chore. She’s also the author of the best-selling “Katie Brown Entertains” and “Katie Brown Decorates.”

And now the no-nonsense household guru is coming to newspapers, in a weekly column from The New York Times Syndicate. Each week, Katie makes home life fun again, whipping up tasty treats, offering tips on transforming a living space or devising solutions to domestic dilemmas.

“She’s the friend next door who also happens to be an expert cook, decorator and gardener,” says Amy Maclin, who edits Katie’s column. “She makes each project an adventure and really infuses everything
with her own spirit, with anecdotes about her life and childhood.”

Maple syrup bread pudding. Summer sand henna candles. A home spa to beat the winter blues. Katie has the ideas that will transform four walls into your unique home, even if you have limited time, money — or patience.

“I am all about shortcuts,” Katie says. “Maybe you only have time to pick up a store-bought cake, but if you add some beautiful organic, edible flowers, then you’ve made it yours — and that makes all the difference.”

Born in Petoskey, Mich., in 1963, Katie Brown is the second of four children and grew up surrounded by her 12 aunts and uncles and 32 first cousins. She says her love for food and entertaining came mainly from her mother: “Food meant love, and the smallest occasions meant a chance to celebrate.”

After earning a degree from Cornell University in art history, Katie moved to New York and then Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. (You may remember her from the Saturn commercial in which she “showed guys the vanity mirror.”)

To supplement her acting income she began a catering company from her home, and in 1994, turned her lifelong infatuation with cooking and decorating into her own antique store and café, Goat, with locations in L.A. and Mackinac Island, Mich.

One day, Lifetime Television called the Mackinac Island Chamber of Commerce in a nationwide search for America’s next domestic diva—and Katie’s first series, “Next Door With Katie Brown,” was born.

Katie went on to share her expertise in “All Year Round with Katie Brown” on the A&E network, as well as regular appearances on “Oprah!,” “Good Morning America,” Today” and “Live With Regis and Kelly.” She is also the author of the best-selling “Katie Brown Entertains” and “Katie Brown Decorates,” and recently signed a four-book deal with Time Warner’s Bulfinch Press (the first title will hit stores in fall 2005).

She lives in Manhattan and Bridgehampton, New York, with her husband and baby daughter.
